This project was created with the intention of having specific lighting moments that align with the solstices and equinoxes.
To achieve this, I relied heavily on solar studies through render. The image on the right shows a top-down view of the same space at 9 am, 12 pm, and 4 pm on the equinox, summer, and Winter solstice.
Comparing the space at different times, on different days, shows the stark contrast that occurs in a space depending on when one is experiencing it.
This building was developed to be multi-use, meaning the lighting not only needs to be effective at the solstices and equinox but also on all days in between.
These renders serve as a test to see how a space will look at any given time
The overall shape was inspired by the surrounding mountain range, emulating its shape with the sharp rooflines. The inhabitable space within the 'crack' shields those inside from their surroundings, forming a quiet oasis.
Following the 3D sun studies more detailed technical drawings can be created, developing the space in response to the findings of the earlier exploration.
